3rd Philippine Arts Festival 2008

Filipino Culture at The Peak

The Peak Galleria: Opening Venue

This exhibition at The Peak Galleria, running from June 8 to June 22, will be the main launching pad for the 3rd Philippine Arts Festival 2008, featuring a selection of works from about 40 Filipino contemporary artists and photographers based in Hong Kong. The reception from 1pm on Sunday, June 8, at the same venue, will bring together sample works from Filipino artists and photographers featured in shows at about seven galleries and other venues across Hong Kong for the month of June and July.

Most of these Filipino contemporary artists are now Hong Kong residents and the themes of their artworks are increasingly evolving to express their respective experiences as migrant professionals and immigrants. One common thread is a peculiar brand of Filipino passion and sensitivity, flavoured with Spanish and American colonial influences, allowing the works to stand out among other “national” arts in the region. Of course, this does not negate the very individual responses that these artists display in their styles and subjects. And to round off the event, the festival also offers a couple of theatre-arts presentations across the city.

We hope that through the exhibition at The Peak Galleria, we will be able to offer locals and tourists alike a “tasting menu” of the various shows being held across Hong Kong to mark the third year of the Philippine Arts Festival, which is being staged with the support of the Consulate General of the Philippines in Hong Kong, Hang Lung Properties, T’s Project, the Philippine Association of Hong Kong and a host of galleries and art spaces, including Asia Fine Art, floren Gallery, The Fringe Club fotogalerie, Karin Weber Gallery, osage soho and Sarasen Gallery. Participating artists and photographers will be at The Peak Galleria from 1pm on Sunday, June 8, for a press conference.

If you want to arrange interviews with individual artists, feel free to check their contact details in the show schedule attached. Our website – www.philartsfesthk.com – will also be offering constant updates on the various events held throughout the festival
